Happy Birthday to me.

Happy Birthday GD.

WOO…

The sounds of distant cheering echoed from the speakers of my computer, as I sat alone in my room re-watching the various clips of previous year’s celebration on the internet. I let out a heavy sigh. A year had already passed by and my birthday was here all over again. However, in comparison to last year’s solo debut event and the atmospheric dinner party, today was of huge contrast. All the other members were too busy working on their solo activities, whilst I was left in the process of producing Big Bang’s album with only the silence of the apartment to keep me company. I paused the video and glanced at the untouched bowl of seaweed soup with disappointment.

Food from out of a can never tastes the same as the real thing. I thought, pushing the content to the further side of the table. I adjusted myself in the chair and turned my focus back onto the scribbled papers that laid in front of me. There is no time for birthday celebrations if you want this album to be successful, Kwon Jiyong. My workaholic conscience was speaking to me as usual.

‘That’s true. Fighting fighting…ya ya ya…’ Just by saying that phrase, it made me giggle uncontrollably and once again I felt energised enough to carry on working. I twiddled with my pen for a second, before attempting to drift back into producer mode.

tick tock…tick tock…

Time continued to move forwards, as I stared blankly at my previous written notes. Inspiration had left me behind. Feeling completely soulless, I remained in my seat collecting dust.

Knock knock…

‘Go away. I’m busy.’ I lied, getting slightly frustrated with the fact that I had accomplished nothing for the past half an hour and this distraction wasn’t what I need right now.

Knock knock knock…

‘I said I’m busy.’ I shouted, fidgeting uncomfortably in my chair whilst staring at the ceiling.

Knock knock…

‘For god sake...’ I approached the door with annoyance, swinging it wide open. ‘What part of busy do you not…’

‘Surprise?’ She stood there smiling timidly at me. It was Park Bom.

‘Huh? W-what…h-how…how did you get in?’ I stammered, trying hard to regain my posture. Damn it. Why do I always lose my cool when she’s around?

‘Seungri gave me the keys.’ She explained, swinging the keys around casually on her finger.

‘Aish, that Maknae.’ I muttered, ruffling my already messy reddish brown hair. ‘I’m going to kill him.’

‘It’s not his fault. He told me you were busy and warned me that you’ll probably be annoyed if I disturbed you. Apparently, the last time he came to check on you, you nearly took off his head.’ Bom responded, putting Seungri’s keys into her bag as she eased gracefully passed me and plonked herself onto my bed.

‘That’s not true.’ I detested, following close behind her. I placed myself beside her, my eyes taking in her presence. The casual green t-shirt, blue jeans and trendy sneakers was her style today, which I liked. There was a minute of silence as she was in the midst of removing the pink scarf that was wrapped around her neck.

‘Then what was all that shouting about a few moments ago?’ She continued, flinging the pink accessory to the side whilst turning her attention back to me.

‘Ahh…’ I covered my face in embarrassment. I had forgotten about that. Her sudden appearance had totally made me lose my mind.

As if she could sense my awkwardness, she began talking again. ‘Anyway, it’s just doesn’t seem right to be celebrating your birthday by doing work, so I thought I’d pay you a visit.’

‘As always, Park Bom is the most caring out of the YG family.’

‘Quit your sweet talk and save it for your fans.’ She gave a displeased chuckle and then paused. ‘Or even that female model girlfriend of yours.’

I looked at her with raised eyebrows. ‘Jealous?’

‘Totally. She’s skinnier and prettier than me.’ I couldn’t believe she said that. You’re perfect just the way you are. I wanted to say, but held my tongue.

‘You know it’s all just rumours.’ I reassured, unsure what she was actually thinking. ‘Plus didn’t I confess to all the fans that you were my girlfriend at Big Bang’s concert?’

‘Please don’t remind me. That was so embarrassing.’

‘Hey, I’m considered to be great boyfriend material in Korea.’ I protested in defence, nudging her gently with my elbow.

‘Mmm…and I’m considered to be great wife material.’ Bom exclaimed, twirling a loose strand of her hair.

‘Then we’d make a perfect couple.’ I joked, hoping how much that that could be true.

‘Mmm…what is that?’ She stated, ignoring my statement and pointing in the direction of my cold soup.

‘What? Oh that…it’s seaweed soup.’

‘Please tell me it’s not from a can.’ She got up from my bed and walked over to examine the substance, as I remained silent. ‘I knew it. It’s a good job I brought this with me.’

She returned back to her original spot, picking up her bag from the floor and started rummaging through the contents. ‘The massive rucksack thing you call a handbag?’

‘Shh…it’s my Mary Poppins’ bag.’

‘Mary Poppins?’ I gaze at her with confusion, whilst she took out a series of objects and laid them out of the floor. There was a flask, a cup, a small plastic container, a candle and a lighter. I observed, as she poured a small amount of homemade seaweed soup from inside the flask into the cup and then opened the container to reveal a cupcake with yellow icing. She pierced the candle into the tiny cake and lit it.

‘Happy Birthday to you…Happy Birthday to you…Happy Birthday to Jiyong…Happy Birthday to you!’ A surge of emotions leapt inside my body, as I listened to her soothing voice sing to me. The song ended and I blew out the candle.

‘Thank you.’ I managed to say in between claps of gratitude.

‘You’re welcome. I hope everything tastes OK.’ She smiled at me, obviously satisfied with her accomplishment. ‘Anyway, I better let you carrying on with your work. I don’t want to be the cause for the late release of Big Bang’s album. The VIPs would kill me.’

‘You’re going? Do I not get a birthday present?’ Slightly shocked and disappointed at her comment. She stood up with her bag on her shoulder and headed towards the exit. Instinctively I followed.

‘Huh? Wasn’t the few minutes of my company enough?’

‘Noo…’ I mimicked one of her trademark phrases.

‘Stop stealing my lines.’ She pouted, turning back to face me.

‘How about a birthday kiss?’ I leaned forwards in an attempt to try out my luck. She tilted backwards and punched me lightly in the arm.

‘Stop joking around or you’ll get more birthday beats.’ Her glistening eyes stared at me kindly and I reverted upright.

‘OK OK. I’m only messing.’ I replied distrustfully, shoving my hands in my pockets. ‘I guess I’ll catch you later.’

‘Yep.’ She spaced out for a second as if contemplating something, then walked out of my room. ‘See you.’

With that, she disappeared down the hallway and out the door. Silence filled the emptiness of the apartment yet again. I lingered by my bedroom door for a while before forcing myself back inside my work zone. As I entered, I noticed the bright fabric that was resting on my duvet.

‘Isn’t this…’ I moved closer to the unfamiliar item, before running my fingers over it. ‘I guess this could count as my birthday present.’ Holding back a sly smile, I wrapped the object around my neck, breathing in the lovely scent of jasmine.

On the other hand…

‘Minji, have you seen my pink scarf?’ I cried, searching through my accessories draw.

‘No, I haven’t. Why? Have you lost it?’ The Maknae replied with concern, rushing to my side.

‘I don’t know where it’s gone.’ I sighed, digging through the random items furiously.

‘It must be here somewhere. I’ll try looking for it in the living room.’ She offered, scampering off to help me search for my disappeared clothing.

‘Pink scarf…pink scarf…where are you?’

The End
